NTRVSTA wrote this comparison. We build a recruiting product of our own, so we kept to facts published by Fountain and Workstream themselves, plus public news, and we name another option at the end.
If you are weighing fountain vs workstream, you probably hire hourly staff across many sites and are tired of stitching together job boards, texting tools and spreadsheets. Both platforms promise to replace that patchwork. They differ in how far past the offer they go, and in how much of the screening they hand to AI.
The short answer
Fountain is the pick if you want a frontline hiring stack driven by AI agents: its Cue agent orchestrates work, and its Anna voice interviewer screens candidates in a few minutes by phone or browser. Workstream is the pick if your bigger pain is everything after the hire, because it adds onboarding, payroll, time tracking and labor compliance to hiring, aimed squarely at restaurants and retail. Both are ATS replacements, and neither publishes a price.
Side by side: Fountain vs Workstream
Where Fountain is stronger
Fountain has moved hardest toward agents. It now calls itself "Frontline Superintelligence," with Cue taking actions on the customer's behalf inside limits the customer sets: execution permissions, budget thresholds and approval triggers. Anna, previously called AI Recruiter, does the screening conversation itself, and Fountain says it adapts to each answer by default.
- A real spoken interview. Anna's output (score, summary, transcript, recording) gives a hiring manager more than a yes or no on screeners.
- Sourcing built in. Fountain's Sourcing product covers job boards, talent pools and re-engagement campaigns.
- Buy just the interviewer. Anna is available through the ADP Marketplace if you don't want the full platform.
- Security posture. Fountain's homepage says it is SOC 2 compliant.
Where Workstream is stronger
Workstream's pitch is that hiring is only the first step of running an hourly team. After someone accepts, the same platform handles their I-9, onboarding documents, pay, time and shift swaps, with compliance checks such as minimum wage and break flags along the way.
- Payroll in the same system. Full-service payroll, tax filing and mobile pay stubs sit in the All-in-one plan.
- Labor compliance monitoring. Alerts and heat maps flag risks across locations.
- Applicants who call. Voice AI answers inbound calls 24/7, screens and books interviews.
- Restaurant depth. Workstream claims 46 of the top 50 restaurant brands, naming Culver's, Arby's and IHOP.
Pricing compared
Fountain's pricing page is a demo form promising pricing tailored to the products you choose. Workstream's page lays out four tiers, Hiring, Essentials, All-in-one and Premium, each with a "Get in touch" button instead of a number. It was running an "up to 8 months free" payroll promotion on All-in-one, with terms it doesn't spell out on the page.
Because Workstream can absorb payroll and time tracking, compare total spend, not hiring spend: Fountain plus your current payroll tool against Workstream's tier that covers both. Ask each vendor how price scales (per location, per employee or per hire) and what happens at renewal. See our Fountain pricing and Workstream pricing guides for a fuller question list.
Who should pick which
- You want every applicant to get a short spoken interview before a manager looks: Fountain.
- You want to retire separate payroll and onboarding tools: Workstream.
- You want an agent that acts within budget and approval limits you configure: Fountain.
- Your store managers handle hiring and scheduling on their phones between shifts: either; ask both for a manager-side demo.
- You only want to add AI screening to an existing ATS: Fountain's Anna through ADP Marketplace.

A third option: NTRVSTA
Honestly, if your hiring is almost all hourly, Fountain or Workstream will serve you better than we will. NTRVSTA is not an ATS or payroll system. It makes sense when you keep your current ATS and need an agent for salaried, skilled or corporate roles. Carolina does the recruiting work inside those systems, and pricing is public on our pricing section.
- Sourcing plus outreach by email, SMS and WhatsApp.
- Resume ranking with a written reason for each candidate.
- Live adaptive AI interviews for technical and non-technical roles, in multiple languages.
- Panel scheduling with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoom or Calendly.
Questions
Are Fountain and Workstream both applicant tracking systems?
Yes. Each is a full hiring platform with its own ATS for hourly and frontline roles, so most buyers use one instead of a separate ATS. Fountain also sells its Anna interviewer on its own through the ADP Marketplace.
Which has the better AI interviewer, Fountain or Workstream?
They work differently. Fountain says Anna runs a short structured voice interview by phone or browser and adapts its follow-up questions to answers. Workstream says its Voice AI answers applicant calls and runs first-round phone screens, and its Video AI collects recorded answers for managers to review.
Does Fountain do payroll?
Fountain's site describes ATS, CRM, sourcing, onboarding and shift scheduling, and does not list payroll. Workstream sells full-service payroll and tax filing in its All-in-one plan.
How much do Fountain and Workstream cost?
Neither publishes prices. Fountain tailors a quote to the product suite you choose after a demo. Workstream lists four plans with no prices and was promoting up to 8 months free on its All-in-one payroll plan when we checked.
Which one is easier to try first?
Neither lists a free trial. Both start with a demo, so bring a real job, location count and hiring volume to each call to get comparable quotes.
