Disclosure: NTRVSTA wrote this comparison of the HackerRank AI interviewer and our own product, so we have a stake in it. Everything we say about HackerRank and Chakra comes from HackerRank's pages or press coverage of its launch, linked at the bottom.
The short answer
Choose HackerRank if you mostly hire engineers and want an AI interviewer that watches candidates solve a real problem in a coding canvas, backed by a large assessment library and 40+ integrations. Choose NTRVSTA if you want one live interviewer for engineering and non-engineering roles, shown as a video avatar or heard as audio, that raises or lowers difficulty as each answer comes in. NTRVSTA also scores resumes against the job description. HackerRank publishes plan prices for its assessment platform but not for Chakra, while NTRVSTA's plans are public from $299/mo.
Side by side: HackerRank AI interviewer vs NTRVSTA
How NTRVSTA works
Our AI interviewer holds a live conversation with each candidate, either as a video avatar on screen or as a voice with no video. It listens to every answer and adjusts. A strong engineer gets pushed toward harder questions, and someone who is struggling gets questions they can still engage with, so you learn where their ceiling is. Candidates start the interview whenever they like, day or night.
For engineering roles, the exam library covers Java, Python, C++, JavaScript and more, plus frameworks and tools like React, Angular, Node.js, AI/ML and DevOps tooling. System-design rounds come with an interactive whiteboard, and a hint system shows how a candidate uses a nudge. The same interviewer handles non-technical screens with STAR behavioral questions and soft-skill exams in communication, problem-solving and leadership.
Each report breaks the score into technical skills, English proficiency and communication, with video snippets of key moments and a link you can send to the hiring manager. Before any of that, AI resume scoring ranks every applicant against the job description. NTRVSTA sits next to your ATS (Lever and others) rather than replacing it.
How the HackerRank AI interviewer works
HackerRank's core business is coding assessments (Screen), live technical interviews run by your engineers (Interview), and upskilling. Its question library covers 55+ programming languages, and it says it connects to 40+ ATS, calendar and video tools, with a REST API and a Chakra MCP server for developers.
Chakra, the HackerRank AI interviewer, became generally available on October 5, 2026 after roughly six months in beta. HackerRank says beta users ran more than 500,000 interviews and names Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini among the testers. Per HackerRank, Chakra "spins up a canvas with a real-world problem," watches how the candidate works with an AI assistant, asks voice follow-ups about their choices, and scores each competency with evidence. Co-founder Vivek Ravisankar told TechCrunch that it merges the recruiter screen, take-home and engineer follow-up into one session.
On security and fairness, HackerRank lists SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR, and says candidate data isn't used to train AI models. Its Chakra page mentions bias audits in line with NYC Local Law 144. Named customers include Google, Amazon and Nvidia.
When HackerRank is the better choice
- Your hiring is mostly engineers, and you want to see them work through a real problem with an AI assistant, not only talk about how they would.
- You already run HackerRank Screen or Interview. Adding Chakra keeps your questions, results and integrations in one system.
- You need a REST API or a long native connector list today. HackerRank lists both, and our API is still marked coming soon.
- You want a large developer platform with well-known engineering customers behind it.
Some limits apply to us no matter who we're compared with. NTRVSTA is a screening and interview layer, so your ATS stays where it is, and our native ATS list is short next to big suites. It isn't designed for hourly hiring run over SMS and chat scheduling; Paradox or Fountain suit that better. Teams that want human engineers to run the interview should look at a Karat-style service. And we're a newer, smaller company with fewer published enterprise case studies.
Pricing compared
HackerRank publishes prices for its assessment platform. Per its FAQ, Starter costs $199/mo (or $1,990/yr) and includes 60 attempts a year. Pro costs $449/mo (or $4,490/yr) with 360 attempts a year and ATS integrations. Enterprise is custom. HackerRank doesn't say whether Chakra is included in those plans, and Chakra has no published price, so get a quote if the AI interviewer is the part you want.
We price by credits. An audio interview uses 1 credit per minute, and an avatar interview uses 3. The Free Demo is $0 with 50 credits. Starter is $299/mo for 1,500 credits (about 30 interviews), Growth is $699/mo for 4,000 credits (about 80), and Scale is $1,999/mo for 12,500 credits (about 250). Enterprise adds custom credits, SSO/SAML, a dedicated CSM and an on-prem option.
On Growth, 80 interviews a month works out to about $8.74 per interview, or $0.35 per minute. Length and format drive the number: a 25-minute audio round is 25 credits, and the same round with an avatar is 75. Model your own volume in our pricing calculator.
Who should pick which
- If your pipeline is almost all software engineers and you want them coding in a live canvas, pick HackerRank.
- If you're hiring engineers and account managers in the same quarter and want one interviewer for both, pick NTRVSTA.
- If your team already runs HackerRank Screen, pick HackerRank and add Chakra.
- If you want candidates to see a face on screen while they answer, pick NTRVSTA with an avatar.
- If you need to rank a big stack of resumes before anyone is interviewed, pick NTRVSTA.
- If your engineers need a REST API this month, pick HackerRank.

Questions
Is Chakra included in HackerRank's Starter plan?
HackerRank doesn't say. Its FAQ lists Starter at $199/mo with 60 attempts a year, and the Chakra page offers a free trial and a demo request but no price. Ask HackerRank directly before you set a budget.
Can the HackerRank AI interviewer screen non-engineering roles?
HackerRank positions Chakra for technical and technical-adjacent roles, naming AI Engineer, FDE, AI PM and GTM Engineer. NTRVSTA covers technical roles and non-technical ones such as sales or support, using STAR behavioral questions and soft-skill exams.
Does Chakra appear as a video avatar?
HackerRank describes Chakra as a voice interview inside a live coding canvas and doesn't mention an avatar. With NTRVSTA you choose a video avatar or audio only for each role.
Which one publishes an NYC Local Law 144 bias audit?
HackerRank's Chakra page mentions bias audits in line with NYC Local Law 144. NTRVSTA's independent audit by Asenion was finalized on October 20, 2026, and the details are on our compliance page.
Curious how an adaptive interviewer handles a coding question? Book a 20-minute demo, or run a sample interview on your own. Our audit summary is on the compliance page.
