HackerRank alternatives for coding tests and AI technical interviews

Assessment platforms, live pads, human interviewers and AI interviewers, matched to the part of HackerRank you want to replace.

Quick disclosure: NTRVSTA wrote this page, and we're one of the HackerRank alternatives listed. We used only each vendor's own published material for the facts, and every source is linked below.

HackerRank is one of the biggest names in technical hiring, with coding assessments (Screen), live technical interviews (Interview) and, since October 5, 2026, a generally available AI interviewer called Chakra. So why look at HackerRank alternatives? Usually for a structural reason. Some teams want a different pricing model, since HackerRank's Starter plan is limited to 60 attempts a year per its FAQ and Chakra's price isn't published. Some want a live coding pad more than a test library. Others hire engineers and non-engineers and want one AI interviewer for both, or want people instead of AI running the interview. If Chakra's work-canvas format fits your engineering roles, you may not need to switch at all.

1. CodeSignal

CodeSignal mirrors HackerRank most closely: coding assessments, live technical interviews, interviewer training and an AI Interviewer. CodeSignal says candidates speak with its AI agent by phone or browser on their own schedule, and it asks follow-ups when answers are thin. Prebuilt interviewers cover sales, finance, marketing and other non-engineering roles. Inside the coding IDE, an AI co-pilot called Cosmo can be switched on for candidates.

Pricing is public. Build starts at $79/mo billed annually with 60 credits a year, and Grow at $479/mo billed annually with 420 credits. A credit is used when a candidate starts an assessment or interview.

Best for: teams that want HackerRank-style assessments and AI interviews at a lower entry price.

2. NTRVSTA (us)

NTRVSTA isn't a coding test library. It's an AI interviewer that holds a live conversation as a video avatar or as audio, and changes difficulty with each answer. For engineering roles, the exam library covers Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, React, Angular, Node.js, AI/ML and DevOps tools, and system-design rounds use an interactive whiteboard. The same product runs STAR behavioral interviews for sales, support or operations, which a coding platform usually doesn't.

A hint system lets you see how candidates take guidance. Reports break scores into technical skills, English proficiency and communication, with video snippets. Plans are public, starting from a $0 Free Demo. Where HackerRank wins: it has a huge question library across 55+ programming languages, a REST API and a deep ATS list, and we have none of those at the same scale (our API is coming soon). Compare directly at NTRVSTA vs HackerRank.

Best for: teams that hire engineers and non-engineers and want one adaptive first-round interview for both.

3. CoderPad

CoderPad is the standard live coding pad. CoderPad says Interview supports 99+ languages and frameworks with playback, Screen offers multi-file coding assessments, and Qualify collects video answers that an AI reviewer scores against your rubric. Higher plans put AI assistants such as Claude Code and Codex in the pad, so interviewers can see the candidate's prompts and edits.

Plans are public: Starter $80/mo annual, Team $400/mo annual and Frontier Lite $1,000/mo, with a free trial and no credit card.

Best for: teams whose main need is collaborative live coding interviews.

4. Codility

Codility focuses on rigorous assessment: async real-world coding tasks, structured live interviews in a VS Code environment, and integrity tools such as proctoring, ID verification and impersonation detection. You decide how candidates may use its Agentic AI Copilot. Codility doesn't offer an AI interviewer. Starter is $1,200 a year for 120 invites, and Scale is $6,000.

Best for: enterprises that want proctored, controlled coding assessments.

5. Karat

Karat replaces the engineer time behind HackerRank's live interviews. Trained human Interview Engineers run structured technical interviews for you, and in Karat NextGen candidates work on multi-file projects with an AI assistant while the interviewer probes. Karat says AI never makes final hiring decisions. Pricing isn't published.

Best for: engineering orgs that want to outsource high-volume technical interviews to people.

6. iMocha

iMocha calls itself a Skills Intelligence platform with 10,000+ validated assessments across coding, cognitive, domain and communication skills. Its AI interviewer, Tara, asks questions candidates answer verbally and follows up based on what they say, per iMocha. It lists SOC 2 Type II and integrations with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors and Oracle. Pricing isn't published.

Best for: large enterprises, especially IT services, that want assessments plus workforce skills data.

7. TestGorilla

TestGorilla is broader and lighter than HackerRank. It offers 350+ pre-employment tests, job simulations and async AI interviews with dynamic follow-ups, covering many non-technical skills. There's a free plan, and paid plans start at $215/mo billed annually.

Best for: teams that want low-cost skills testing across many role types.

When to stay with HackerRank

Stay with HackerRank if your hiring is engineering-heavy and you want one widely known platform for screens, live interviews and an AI interviewer that watches candidates build with AI. HackerRank says Chakra ran 500K+ beta interviews, it lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001, and the Chakra page mentions bias audits in line with NYC Local Law 144. It also has the broadest integration story here, with 40+ ATS, calendar and video integrations, a REST API and a Chakra MCP.

Questions

What is the closest alternative to HackerRank?

CodeSignal. It sells coding assessments, live technical interviews and an AI Interviewer, much like HackerRank, with public plans from $79/mo billed annually.

Does HackerRank have an AI interviewer?

Yes. Chakra went generally available on October 5, 2026. HackerRank says it runs adaptive voice follow-ups inside a live work canvas. Its price isn't published.

Which HackerRank alternative works for non-technical roles too?

NTRVSTA runs technical and non-technical interviews in one product. CodeSignal offers prebuilt AI interviewers for sales, finance and marketing, and TestGorilla tests a broad range of skills.

Can I use an AI interviewer with my existing coding tests?

Yes. A common setup is an AI interviewer for the first conversation, then a coding assessment or live pad for finalists. Check that both tools connect to your ATS.

Hiring engineers and other roles in the same quarter? Book a 20-minute demo, or try a sample interview yourself to see adaptive difficulty in action.
