Best coding assessment tools in 2026

Seven platforms for async, auto-scored coding tests, ranked for engineering hiring. We're not one of them, and we explain why.

Disclosure: NTRVSTA wrote this guide to coding assessment tools. We don't sell a coding test platform, so NTRVSTA isn't in the ranked seven; it appears only as an honorable mention for teams that want a conversational technical round instead. Every fact about the ranked tools comes from the vendors' own pages, linked at the end.

TL;DR

The best coding assessment tools give candidates realistic work, grade it automatically, catch cheating, and let you set clear rules on AI assistants. HackerRank, Codility and CodeSignal are the strongest all-round technical assessment software for engineering teams. If you also test non-engineers, a broader library like TestGorilla or iMocha may fit better.

  • Best overall coding assessment platform: HackerRank
  • Best for proctored, enterprise-grade rigor: Codility
  • Best for low entry price with AI-assisted assessments: CodeSignal
  • Best for multi-file tests on the same platform as live coding: CoderPad
  • Best for mixed technical and non-technical testing on a budget: TestGorilla

What actually matters when choosing coding assessment tools

Realism beats puzzles. A good test looks like the job: a small multi-file project, a bug in existing code, or an API to extend, not a trick algorithm question. Check whether each platform supports project-style tasks in the languages and frameworks you use, and whether you can write your own.

Set your AI policy before you buy. Some teams ban AI assistants in tests; others want to see how a candidate prompts, checks and fixes AI output. CodeSignal, Codility and CoderPad each describe ways to include an AI assistant on purpose, while proctoring tools help when you want it off. Whichever you choose, tell candidates up front.

Price by attempt, not by plan. Coding assessment tools mostly sell a bucket of attempts, invites or credits. Divide the plan price by the number you'll really use, add overage costs, and compare. A $199 plan with 60 attempts a year is a very different deal from a $79 plan with 60 credits, depending on what each credit covers.

1. HackerRank

HackerRank is our top pick because it covers the most ground for engineering hiring. Its Screen product runs coding and project-based tests from a library spanning 55+ programming languages, its Interview product handles live sessions, and its Chakra AI interviewer adds an adaptive voice round when you want one. Customers HackerRank names include Google, DoorDash, Atlassian and Nvidia.

Plans are public: Starter at $199/mo (or $1,990 a year) for 60 attempts a year, and Pro at $449/mo for 360 with ATS integrations. HackerRank lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001, and says candidate data isn't used to train its AI models.

Best for: engineering teams that want a widely recognized test library with room to grow into live and AI interviews.

2. Codility

Codility is built for rigor. Codility says its Screen tasks reflect real-world work, its assessments are designed with I/O psychologists, and its integrity tools include proctoring, ID verification and impersonation detection. You decide how candidates may use its Agentic AI Copilot, and Codility says it can test prompt writing, judging AI output and debugging AI-written code.

Starter is $1,200 a year for 120 invites and one user. Scale is shown at $6,000 for 300 invites and three users. Codility lists SOC 2, ISO 27001 and WCAG 2.2 AA, and integrates with Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday. Its Custom plan adds fairness analysis. Customers it names include GitHub, SpaceX and Barclays.

Best for: enterprises and regulated employers that want defensible, proctored assessments.

3. CodeSignal

CodeSignal has the lowest published entry price among the big three. The Build plan is $79/mo billed annually for 60 credits a year, and a credit is used each time a candidate starts an assessment or interview; extra credits are $20. CodeSignal says its assessments are validated by I-O psychologists and that it runs fairness testing and adverse impact studies.

Its AI-assisted coding assessments let candidates work with Cosmo, a configurable co-pilot inside the IDE. CodeSignal also sells an AI Interviewer if you want a spoken round later. Named customers include Meta, Brex and Robinhood.

Best for: startups and scale-ups that want proven coding tests at a low starting price.

4. CoderPad

CoderPad's Screen product runs multi-file coding assessments in 65+ languages, and its Team plan adds take-homes and auto-scored screens. The advantage is continuity: the same environment powers CoderPad's live interviews, so candidates who pass the test meet a familiar pad in the next round. Frontier plans put Claude Code and Codex inside the environment.

Starter is $80/mo billed annually for 60 tests or interviews a year; Team is $400/mo for 360. Webcam proctoring and ATS integrations are on Enterprise. CoderPad lists SOC 2 Type 2.

Best for: teams that want screening tests and live coding interviews in one tool.

5. TestGorilla

TestGorilla is broader than a coding platform. It says it offers 350+ pre-employment skills tests and job simulations, scored automatically, plus custom tests on higher plans and async AI interviews. That breadth helps if one tool has to cover developers, analysts and support staff.

A free plan includes 10 assessment credits a month. Paid assessment plans start at $215/mo on annual billing, and Plus ($520/mo annual) adds custom tests, job simulations and ATS integrations. TestGorilla lists SOC 2 Type II.

Best for: SMBs testing a mix of technical and non-technical roles on a budget.

6. iMocha

iMocha says it has 10,000+ validated assessments across coding, cognitive, domain and communication skills, with proctoring, plus a skills-intelligence layer for mapping workforce skills. Its AI interviewer, Tara, can add a spoken round. iMocha integrates with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors and Oracle and lists SOC 2 Type II. Customers include Deloitte, Capgemini and EY. Pricing isn't published.

Best for: large employers, especially in IT services, that hire and reskill technical staff at scale.

7. Vervoe

Vervoe's AI Assessment Builder drafts role-based tests from a job description, mixing code, spreadsheet, video, text and multiple-choice tasks, then grades and ranks candidates with explainable scores. Vervoe also collects performance feedback 120 days after hire, and says Holistic AI audits it for bias each year. Pricing isn't published.

Best for: teams hiring for hybrid roles where coding is one skill among several.

Honorable mention: NTRVSTA (us), for a conversational technical round

NTRVSTA isn't a coding test, and if you want auto-graded code run against test cases, pick one of the seven above. What we offer is a live AI interview that probes technical knowledge out loud. Our exam library covers languages like Java, Python, C++ and JavaScript, frameworks like React and Node.js, AI/ML and DevOps tools, and system design on an interactive whiteboard. The interviewer, as a video avatar or audio, raises or lowers difficulty with each answer, and a hint system shows how candidates respond to guidance.

Some teams use that before or after a coding test to hear how a candidate reasons and explains trade-offs. It's a complement to the tools above, not a replacement. Where NTRVSTA isn't the right fit: it won't run or grade code, it's an interview layer rather than an ATS, its native ATS list (Lever and others) is short, and its public API is still coming soon. See the best technical interview platforms for how AI interviewers compare with live coding pads.

Our pick

  • Most engineering teams: HackerRank.
  • Regulated or enterprise hiring that needs proctoring and validation: Codility.
  • Lowest published starting price: CodeSignal.
  • Tests and live pads in one place: CoderPad.
  • A mix of developer and non-developer roles: TestGorilla or iMocha.
  • You want to hear how candidates reason, not just whether code passes: add NTRVSTA's AI interview next to a test.

Questions

What is technical assessment software?

It's software that tests a candidate's technical skills, usually with timed coding tasks, projects or questions that are graded automatically. It helps you screen many applicants fairly before engineers spend time on live interviews.

How long should a coding assessment be?

We suggest keeping a first screen under 90 minutes, and shorter is kinder. Long take-homes lose strong candidates who have other offers. Test only the skills the role needs, and save deep work for later rounds.

How do coding assessment tools prevent cheating?

Methods vary. Codility lists proctoring, ID verification and impersonation detection, and CoderPad offers webcam proctoring on its Enterprise plan. Many teams also accept that candidates use AI and design tasks that show how they use it.

Are coding tests fair to candidates?

They can be, if the tasks match the job, everyone gets the same conditions, and results are reviewed by people. Codility says its assessments are designed by I/O psychologists, and CodeSignal says its assessments are validated by them. Watch pass rates by group in your own data.
