The short answer
An AI recruiter is software that does recruiting work a person would otherwise do, such as finding candidates, writing and sending outreach, scoring resumes, running first-round interviews and booking meetings, usually inside the hiring systems an employer already uses and under rules the team sets. The same phrase is sometimes used for a human recruiter who specializes in AI and machine learning roles, so check which one a job post or vendor means. It matters because it shifts a recruiter's time from repetitive steps toward judgment: aligning with hiring managers, closing candidates and making the call.
How an AI recruiter works
Most products sold as AI recruiters cover part of the hiring funnel, and a few cover most of it. The useful question is not "is it AI?" but "which steps does it actually perform, and which does it only suggest?" The table shows a typical split.
An example: a 200-person software company has one recruiter and twelve open roles. Overnight, the AI recruiter finds new candidates for three of them, sends approved outreach, and books first-round interviews with the people who replied. The recruiter starts the day with a ranked shortlist and a filled calendar, and spends it on intake meetings and closing two finalists.
NTRVSTA's AI recruiter, Carolina, works this way inside a company's existing ATS: she sources, runs outreach by email, SMS and WhatsApp, scores resumes, runs live AI interviews and schedules panels, with each action set to suggest, ask first or run on its own. What to ask before you buy an AI recruiter
- Which steps does it do, and which does it only suggest? Ask for a live demo on one of your real roles.
- Does it work inside your ATS or ask you to move? Replacing a system of record is a much bigger project than adding a tool.
- What can it do without approval? Look for settings per action, not one global switch.
- Is there a published bias audit, and what does it cover? An audit of one feature does not cover the others.
- How is it priced? Per seat, per hire, per interview and flat plans all exist, and the cheapest model depends on your volume.

Questions
Will AI recruiters replace human recruiters?
They replace tasks more than people. Searching, first messages, resume ranking, first-round screens and scheduling move to software, while intake with hiring managers, selling the role, negotiation and final decisions stay with recruiters.
Is an AI recruiter the same as an applicant tracking system?
No. An applicant tracking system is the record of jobs, applicants and stages. An AI recruiter does work on top of that record, such as finding, messaging and screening candidates, and many are built to connect to the ATS you already have.
How much does an AI recruiter cost?
Pricing varies by model. Vendors charge per seat, per hire, per interview or a flat monthly plan, and some offer a free tier for one role. Estimate your monthly roles and interviews first, then compare total cost rather than list price.
