How to Prepare for a HeyMilo Interview (2026 Candidate Guide)

Everything HeyMilo tells candidates about its AI interviews, organized into one plan, plus the habits that help in any conversation with an AI interviewer.

The short answer

A HeyMilo interview is a conversation with an AI agent, by voice in your browser, by video, or sometimes as a phone call, that asks role-related questions and follows up when more detail would help. HeyMilo says a voice or video interview usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, and your answers are recorded and transcribed for the hiring team, who make the decisions. You normally get one attempt. If you drop off before 70% of the interview, you can rejoin and continue, but you can't redo answers. Prepare by reviewing the job description, lining up a few true examples, testing your mic and camera in the browser you'll use, and finding a quiet room.

What a HeyMilo interview can look like

HeyMilo is a screening platform, and employers chain its steps together. You may meet more than one in the same application. Here's what HeyMilo's own documentation describes for each type.

StepWhat you doTypical length (per HeyMilo)
FormFill out a structured questionnaire, no AI follow-upsAbout 2 to 5 minutes
SMSReply to questions by text, at your own paceA quick back-and-forth
Voice or video interviewTalk with the AI in your browser, or take a phone call; it asks questions and follow-upsAbout 10 to 20 minutes
AI Scenario AssessmentWork through a task in a browser chat with an AI to produce a deliverableAbout 20 to 30 minutes

Two things stand out. First, the AI Scenario Assessment is different from every other step: HeyMilo says it's scored on how well you prompt and guide the AI. There, working with AI is the skill being tested. Second, employers can set "dealbreaker" questions, such as work authorization or minimum experience. HeyMilo says candidates who don't meet them are automatically disqualified at that step, so answer must-have questions accurately and read them carefully.

Your HeyMilo interview, step by step

  1. Find your link. It comes by email (always) and sometimes also by text. Check spam if you can't see it.
  2. Test your internet. HeyMilo's setup guide suggests running a speed test first and making sure browsing quality is rated good or better.
  3. Log in. Enter your full name and email, agree to the terms and privacy policy, and click Start Interview.
  4. Grant permissions. Allow the microphone for an audio interview, or camera and microphone for video, then pick the right speaker, mic and camera from the drop-downs.
  5. Consent and begin. HeyMilo says the AI introduces itself and asks for consent to record where required.
  6. Answer the questions. HeyMilo shows a live on-screen transcript of what the AI asks, and Interview Guidelines stay available on screen.
  7. Close out. You get a closing message and a thank-you; the employer gets your report.

How to talk to the HeyMilo agent

HeyMilo publishes a short guide on speaking with its agent, and it's sensible advice. Our version, with a few additions:

  • Answer the question first. Then add the example. HeyMilo puts it as "start with your main point and continue if needed," because follow-ups will ask for more.
  • Match length to the question. Factual questions ("Are you available weekends?") need one line. Questions about solving a problem, handling a challenge or working with others deserve a full example, which is where the STAR method helps.
  • Use the "Don't Interrupt Me" button. If you need a moment to think, press it so the agent knows you're still going. HeyMilo says that if the agent jumps in anyway, your full answer is still captured, so you can just keep talking.
  • Pausing is fine; long silence isn't. After extended silence the agent checks whether you're there, and with no reply the interview may end. You can rejoin with the same link.
  • Don't over-rehearse. HeyMilo lists rushing, rambling, scripted replies and skipping questions as common mistakes. If you must skip, say so briefly.
  • Tie answers to the job. HeyMilo notes the AI is tailored to the role, and that it "might not read your resume in real-time." Say the relevant parts of your resume out loud instead of assuming they're known.

Have a question or two ready for the end, and confirm your interest and availability if asked. HeyMilo says your answers are reviewed by real hiring teams, so finish the way you would with a person.

Technical questions in a HeyMilo interview

Many HeyMilo interviews for developer, data or engineering roles include technical questions drawn from the job description. HeyMilo says the goal is to judge clarity, depth of understanding, real-world experience and problem-solving, not to recite definitions. It suggests a simple four-part structure:

  1. Definition: one or two sentences on what the concept is.
  2. Context: where you've used it.
  3. Example: a specific project or scenario.
  4. Impact: what changed because of it, if you know.

HeyMilo also says "You're not timed" on these, so take a breath before answering. If you don't know something, say so and explain how you'd find out; HeyMilo calls that far better than guessing. To warm up, try role pages such as our software engineer interview questions or data analyst interview questions, and say your answers out loud.

The 70% rule, rejoining and redos

This is the HeyMilo detail candidates most often miss. By default, you can complete a HeyMilo interview only once.

  • Before 70%: if you lose connection or exit, you can rejoin and pick up where you left off. You can't go back and redo questions you've already answered.
  • After 70%: the interview counts as finished and you can't rejoin. So don't close the tab near the end to "start fresh."
  • Redo: only if the employer approves it. HeyMilo says the employer sees both the original and the redo, and a redo requires logging in with a different email.

If you get disconnected and can't rejoin, tell the recruiter right away and ask about rescheduling.

What HeyMilo records and checks

HeyMilo tells candidates directly that answers are recorded and transcribed for the hiring team. Video interviews capture your camera, and the setup flow asks you to choose a camera and microphone so HeyMilo can record and transcribe accurately.

On integrity, HeyMilo's employer-facing pages list detection of AI-generated answers, monitoring for off-screen glances and multiple voices, and voice biometrics to confirm identity, combined into a trust score per candidate. HeyMilo's pages don't say whether your screen is recorded, so ask the recruiter if you want to know. And to be plain about it: using a hidden AI assistant during the interview is usually against the employer's rules, can get your application rejected, and is something HeyMilo says it looks for. Bring your own examples; they're what scores well.

After the process, you can ask HeyMilo to delete your data through the "My Data" link at the bottom of your interview page. HeyMilo notes this is permanent and covers only HeyMilo, not the employer's own systems.

If something breaks

  • Won't load: use an updated Chrome or Edge, clear cache and cookies, and disable extensions.
  • No mic or camera: check browser permissions and your system settings, then restart the browser.
  • Choppy audio or lag: close bandwidth-heavy apps, wear headphones, and use a wired connection if you can.
  • Disconnected: rejoin with the same link (remember the 70% rule), or notify the recruiter.
  • Still stuck: HeyMilo's candidate support is at support@heymilo.ai, and the employer is your contact for scheduling.

Questions

How long is a HeyMilo interview?

HeyMilo says a voice or video interview typically takes about 10 to 20 minutes, and an AI Scenario Assessment about 20 to 30. Forms are shorter. The employer decides which steps you get.

What happens if HeyMilo cuts me off mid-answer?

Keep going or tell the agent you're not finished. HeyMilo says your full response is still captured. Next time you need a moment, press the Don't Interrupt Me button on the interview screen.

Can I restart my HeyMilo interview?

Not on your own. You can rejoin and continue if you dropped off before 70%, but answered questions stay as they are. A full redo needs the employer's approval, and they can see both attempts.

Is a person going to look at my HeyMilo interview?

Yes. HeyMilo says your responses are reviewed by real hiring teams, who see a transcript and report. The AI runs the conversation and scores against the employer's criteria, but people make the hiring call.
