Full disclosure: NTRVSTA wrote this guide, and our AI interviewer is one of the tools in it. We sell interviews, not sourcing or an ATS, so we've recommended other tools for those jobs. Facts about each vendor come from its own pages, linked in Sources.
TL;DR
AI recruiting for startups works best as a small stack: one tool to find people, one to screen them, and a simple place to track them. Juicebox covers sourcing, NTRVSTA or Metaview covers the first-round screen, and Manatal is a low-cost ATS. Add CodeSignal or HackerRank if you're hiring engineers at volume.
- Best for finding candidates without a recruiter: Juicebox
- Best for live, adaptive first-round interviews with public pricing: NTRVSTA (us)
- Best for interview notes plus free AI screens to start: Metaview
- Best for a cheap ATS with AI matching: Manatal
- Best for low-cost engineering and go-to-market AI interviews: CodeSignal
The picks at a glance
What actually matters for AI recruiting for startups
Founder time is the scarcest thing you have. Picture five open roles with 40 first calls each at 30 minutes: that's 100 hours of first calls before anyone reaches a final round. So the best AI tools for a startup take repetitive work off the founders' plates without locking you into a long contract or a sales cycle. Public pricing, a free tier, and setup in days rather than months matter more here than enterprise features.
The second factor is the mix of roles. Early teams hire engineers, then a first salesperson, then operations and support. A tool that only tests code will cover part of that. Look for screening that works for technical and non-technical roles, or plan to pair a coding test with a general screen.
Third, protect the candidate experience. Strong candidates at a startup are often choosing between you and a bigger company. Take any AI interview yourself before you send it, keep it short, and make the first round feel like a real conversation about the job. Our guide to what an AI interview is explains the formats.
1. Juicebox
Most startups don't have an applicant problem until they have a sourcing problem. Juicebox (also called PeopleGPT) lets you describe a role in plain English and returns a ranked pool from 800M+ profiles across 30+ data sources, with AI-written outreach. Juicebox Agents keep sourcing in the background and can auto-email or auto-shortlist. It integrates with Lever, Ashby, Greenhouse and other ATS on the Business plan.
There's a free plan. Starter is $99 to $119 per seat a month and Growth is $179 to $199, depending on billing.
Best for: founders and first recruiters who need to find people before they can screen them.
2. NTRVSTA (us)
NTRVSTA takes the first-round call off your calendar. Its AI interviewer talks with candidates live, as a video avatar or by audio, and raises or lowers difficulty based on each answer. It covers engineering (programming languages, frameworks, and system design on an interactive whiteboard) and non-technical roles (STAR behavioral questions, communication, problem-solving). Candidates interview 24/7, which helps when you're hiring across time zones. AI resume scoring ranks every applicant against your job description.
Pricing is public. The Free Demo is $0 with 50 credits. Starter is $299/mo for about 30 interviews and Growth is $699/mo for about 80, which works out to about $8.74 per interview. Most teams are set up within a few days.
Where NTRVSTA isn't the right fit: it's not an ATS or a sourcing tool, its native ATS list (Lever and others) is short, and its public API is coming soon rather than live. If you're hiring a single engineer this year, a free coding test and your own time may be enough.
Best for: startups hiring several roles at once, technical and non-technical, who want a deeper first round than a form.

3. Metaview
Metaview began as an interview notetaker and now sells modular AI agents for sourcing, application review, screening, notes and outreach. Its voice Screening agent holds a two-way conversation that Metaview says adapts to the role and the candidate's answers. Published customers include Replit, Brex and Deel. The first 25 AI screens are free, and sourcing plans run $0, $100 and $300 per user a month. It lists Ashby, Greenhouse and Lever integrations.
Best for: startups whose team already runs lots of interviews and wants notes and screening from one vendor.
4. Manatal
Every startup eventually needs one place to track candidates. Manatal is a low-cost ATS that uses AI to recommend and score candidates against job descriptions, parse resumes and help through an AI Copilot. It connects to LinkedIn, Indeed and other job boards. Professional is $15 per user a month billed annually ($19 monthly), with a 14-day free trial and no credit card. A paid AI Interviewer add-on runs async video screens.
Best for: small teams that need their first ATS without a big bill.
5. CodeSignal
CodeSignal pairs established coding assessments with an AI Interviewer that candidates speak with by phone or browser. It asks follow-ups when answers are thin and returns a score, skills evaluation and transcript. Build is $79/mo billed annually for product, design and engineering interviewers. Grow, at $479/mo billed annually, adds sales, customer success and marketing. Customers include Brex and Instacart.
Best for: startups that want cheap, self-serve AI interviews for engineers and early go-to-market hires.
6. HackerRank
HackerRank's Chakra AI interviewer, generally available since October 5, 2026, opens a canvas with a real-world problem, watches how the candidate works with an AI assistant, and asks adaptive voice follow-ups. Its Starter plan is $199/mo, but Chakra's price isn't published. Customers include Replit and Clay. HackerRank offers a self-serve free trial.
Best for: AI-native startups that want to test how engineers build with AI tools.
7. TestGorilla
TestGorilla offers a library of 350+ skills tests and job simulations, plus async AI interviews with structured questions and AI follow-ups that candidates complete on their own time. The free plan includes 10 assessment credits a month. Paid plans start at $215/mo billed annually.
Best for: early teams that want a quick skills filter before anyone spends time on calls.
8. Hireflix
Hireflix keeps it simple: you build a one-way video interview once, candidates record answers on any device with no app, and you share recordings with the team. It has no AI features and doesn't try to. The Small plan, for companies under 50 people, is $75/mo billed yearly, with a one-month free trial and Lever and Ashby integrations.
Best for: very small teams that want an async screen and are happy to review every video themselves.

Questions
What AI recruiting tools should a startup buy first?
Buy for your biggest bottleneck. If you can't find people, start with sourcing such as Juicebox. If you have applicants but founders spend every afternoon on first calls, add an AI interviewer. If you're hiring engineers at volume, add a coding test. A lightweight ATS ties it together.
Is AI screening fair to candidates at a startup?
It can be, if you set it up with care. Use the same job-related questions for everyone, read the evidence behind every score, and keep a person accountable for each decision. Tell candidates up front that the first round uses AI, and offer an accommodation path.
How much should a startup spend on AI recruiting?
Many tools here have free tiers: Juicebox, Metaview's sourcing plan and TestGorilla all start at $0. Paid tools start from about $15 per user a month for an ATS like Manatal to a few hundred dollars a month for interviews or coding tests. Compare that with the cost of founder hours.
Can an AI interviewer replace a founder's screening call?
It can replace the repetitive part: checking skills, walking through past work, and probing vague answers. It won't sell your vision. Many founders use AI for the first round, then spend their own time on the final conversations with the strongest candidates.
