How to Prepare for a HireVue Interview (2026 Guide)

HireVue interview tips for candidates, built from HireVue's own candidate FAQ and help center, with a 5-day plan and sample questions.

The short answer

Here's how to prepare for a HireVue interview in one paragraph. First, work out which HireVue format you were invited to: most invites are On Demand interviews, where questions appear on screen and you record your answers, but HireVue also runs live video calls, assessments, coding challenges and a voice AI interviewer. Next, pull the main skills from the job description and prepare a true, specific story for each. Use HireVue's free practice questions until the countdown stops feeling strange. Test your camera, microphone and connection on the device you'll actually use. Then take it at the time of day you think best. Below you'll find HireVue interview tips, the HireVue interview questions you're likely to see, and what to do when something breaks.

Which HireVue format is your invite?

HireVue is a platform, not one test. The company you applied to chooses the format, writes or picks the questions, and sets the timing, number of attempts and deadline. Here's what each format looks like, based on HireVue's candidate pages and help center:

FormatWhat happensHow to prepare
On Demand interviewQuestions appear on screen one at a time. Most need a recorded video answer; some may be a short essay or multiple choice.Practice answering out loud against a timer, on camera
Video-based assessmentAn On Demand interview whose answers are also scored against job competencies. HireVue says most have five to eight questions, with several minutes per answer.Prepare behavioral and "what would you do" examples tied to the job
Live interviewA real-time video call with a person, run inside HireVuePrepare as for any video interview; it needs a faster connection
Game-based assessmentGame-style tasks instead of interview questions; the help center has its own setup and troubleshooting guidesRead each set of instructions carefully and use a quiet room
CodeVue challengeA coding task in a language the employer allows; not supported on phonesUse the Practice option before you click Start Challenge
AI InterviewerHireVue says an AI agent asks questions, probes with follow-ups and records your answers in a two-way conversationPractice with someone who asks "why?" after every answer

The invite email usually names the format. If it doesn't, the first screens will: HireVue shows the company, the role, how many questions there are, what types they are and an estimated time before you begin.

Step by step: what you'll see in an On Demand interview

This is the most common HireVue format. HireVue's help center walks through it like this:

  1. Open the link marked "Practice or Interview" in your invite. HireVue recommends Google Chrome on a computer, though phones and tablets work too.
  2. Read the requirements page, then the overview: company, role, number and type of questions, estimated length.
  3. Accept the terms. Questions about them go to the hiring company, not HireVue.
  4. Watch the intro video if the company added one. You're not in the interview yet.
  5. Allow camera and microphone access and pass the equipment check. You should see yourself and a moving mic meter.
  6. Check how many attempts you get. A screen tells you how many tries per question the employer allows. It varies by company.
  7. Do the practice questions. A blue banner shows you're in practice mode. You get prep time (the screen says "Not Recording"), a 3-second countdown, then a response timer. Watch your answer back and fix your lighting or volume.
  8. Start the real interview when you're ready, or close the window and come back later with the same link.
  9. Answer each question. Click "Done Answering" when you finish; otherwise the answer submits itself when time runs out.
  10. Finish. Your answers upload to the employer, who decides next steps. HireVue support can't see your application status.

HireVue interview questions and how to answer them

Nobody outside the hiring company knows your exact questions. HireVue's practice questions are generic on purpose, and every candidate for the same job gets the same questions and the same time. What HireVue does publish is the three question styles used in its video assessments. Here's how to handle each, with sample questions we wrote:

Past behavior questions

These ask what you actually did. Examples: "Tell me about a time you had to learn a new tool quickly." "Describe a time you disagreed with a manager." "Give an example of a goal you missed and what you did next." Answer with STAR: one or two sentences of situation and task, most of your time on your own actions, then a result with a number if you have one. Our STAR method guide shows how to build these, and our behavioral interview questions page has plenty more to practice.

Situational judgment questions

These describe a situation you haven't faced and ask what you'd do. Example: "Two customers need help at once and one is getting angry. What do you do?" State your first action, explain why, then say what you'd do if it didn't work. Graders look for judgment, so naming the trade-off ("I'd acknowledge the waiting customer first so they don't feel ignored") counts for more than a perfect answer.

Scenario simulations

HireVue says some questions ask you to act out your response rather than describe it. For a customer-facing job, you might be asked to speak to the camera as if it were an upset customer. Don't narrate ("I would apologize"). Do it: "I'm sorry this happened. Let's sort it out now." Empathy, a clear next step and a calm tone are what these test.

Questions almost every screen includes

  • "Why do you want this role?" Name two specific things from the posting and connect each to something you've done.
  • "Walk me through your background." Keep it to 60 to 90 seconds and end on why this job is the next step.
  • "What's a strength you'd bring to this team?" Pick one, prove it with a short example.
  • "Tell me about a mistake." Own it, show the fix, say what you changed afterward.

A 5-day plan to prepare for a HireVue interview

DayDo thisDone when
1Highlight the 4 to 6 skills the job description repeats. Read the company's careers page. You can say why you want this job in two sentences
2Write one STAR story per skill, as bullet points, not a scriptEach story has a number or a concrete before-and-after
3Record yourself answering 6 sample questions on your phone, with a timerEvery answer lands its result before time runs out
4Open the invite, run HireVue's equipment check, and do the practice questionsLighting, sound and framing look right on playback
5Take the interview at the time of day you feel sharpestSubmitted before the deadline in your invite

HireVue's help center says you can log in early, run the system setup, then close the browser and come back later. That makes day 4 risk-free.

HireVue interview tips for the day itself

  • Use the prep time to outline, not to script. Jot three words: the situation, your key action, the result.
  • Light your face from the front. HireVue suggests closing the blinds if a window is behind you.
  • Move your video preview near the top center of the screen. HireVue's tip: you'll look at it naturally, and it will look like you're looking at the camera. Its tips page also says not to stress about eye contact.
  • Clear the background. HireVue warns that everything the webcam sees and the microphone hears is recorded.
  • Don't fill the whole timer. A complete answer in 90 seconds beats a padded one in three minutes. Click "Done Answering."
  • Plug in your laptop and close apps that use bandwidth. HireVue recommends at least 350 kbps for On Demand interviews.
  • Be yourself. HireVue says its assessments aren't measuring you against one "perfect candidate," and nervous blinking isn't what's scored. Content is.

What HireVue records, and what it says it doesn't do

Candidates search "does HireVue record your screen" a lot, so here is what HireVue publishes:

  • Your answers are recorded: video, plus any written or multiple-choice responses. After you finish, you can't replay your recording in HireVue; ask the employer if you want it.
  • Practice answers are not. HireVue says they're never uploaded and nobody but you sees them.
  • Your screen is shared only when a task asks for it. HireVue's help center says some On Demand and Live interviews ask you to share your screen to show a skill, which needs the latest Chrome or Edge on a computer. HireVue doesn't publish anything about screen capture outside those tasks, so ask the recruiter if you're unsure.
  • Employers can add integrity checks. HireVue's cheating and fraud page lists options such as candidate snapshots, flags when the browser loses focus, disabled pasting and ID verification, and says these checks are explained before the interview begins. Read that screen carefully.
  • No facial recognition. HireVue says it never uses your video to identify you, and that its assessments don't consider age, race, gender, GPA or where you studied, or hunt for keywords.
  • Your data follows the employer's rules. HireVue keeps it for the retention period the employer chose. Deletion requests go to the employer.

One honest warning: running a hidden AI assistant or having someone feed you answers is usually against the employer's rules, and it can get your application rejected. HireVue's own FAQ says no course can game its assessments. Your real stories, told clearly, are the strategy.

If something goes wrong

  • Connection drops: reopen the invite link. HireVue sends you to the next unanswered question. If you dropped mid-answer, that answer was most likely submitted and can't be reset, so finish and then tell the recruiter.
  • Camera or mic not detected: allow access in your browser, try Chrome, or switch devices. HireVue lists Windows 10 or newer, macOS 10.12 or newer, and recent iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Chromium devices aren't supported.
  • Deadline passed: the link expires and HireVue support can't extend it. Only the employer can send a new invite, so write to them quickly.
  • You need more time or another format: on the first page of the interview, use the link to request accommodations; it adds time to timed questions. For anything else, such as a different language or questions in advance, ask the employer.

Questions

Can I retake a HireVue interview?

Not on your own. Once an answer is submitted you can't go back to it, and HireVue says only the hiring company can approve a retake of the whole interview. If a dropped connection or a broken device spoiled an answer, finish the interview, then email the recruiter, explain what happened, and ask.

Does a computer decide whether I get the job?

HireVue says its interviews and assessments are usually a first step that replaces the recruiter phone screen, and that people make the hiring decisions after person-to-person interviews. Some interviews include an assessment that scores your answers against job competencies; others are simply recorded for a recruiter to watch.

How long does a HireVue interview take?

It depends on how the employer set it up. HireVue's FAQ says most video-based assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes and suggests keeping 45 minutes free. The screen before you start shows the number of questions and an estimated length.

Can I use notes during a HireVue interview?

HireVue's interview tips page says you can keep notes next to you as a reminder. Keep them to a few words per story. Reading full answers sounds flat on video, and anything else on your desk should follow the employer's rules.

Want a warm-up that talks back? NTRVSTA lets anyone take a free sample AI interview. It's a live, adaptive interview, not a copy of HireVue's format, and we aren't affiliated with HireVue, but it's good practice for answering out loud under a little pressure. If you're on a hiring team, book a 20-minute demo. For employers comparing tools, see NTRVSTA vs HireVue.
