Full disclosure: we're the team behind NTRVSTA, and our AI interviewer is one of the eight on this list. What we say about the other seven comes from their own sites and press releases, linked at the bottom, and we name the cases where one of them suits you better than we do.
TL;DR
An AI interviewer is the agent that runs the conversation itself: it asks, listens, follows up, and scores. The best AI interviewer for you comes down to three questions: voice or video, which roles you hire for, and how much proof of fairness your legal team needs. Here's how the eight we compared split.
- Best for adaptive video-avatar or audio interviews across technical and business roles: NTRVSTA (us)
- Best for large enterprises that need a long list of certifications: Eightfold AI Interviewer
- Best for staffing firms screening over voice, video and SMS: HeyMilo
- Best for hourly roles inside a full frontline hiring stack: Fountain (Anna)
- Best for teams that already run HireVue video interviews: HireVue
The picks at a glance
What actually matters when choosing an AI interviewer
Check the follow-ups first. Plenty of products now call themselves an AI interviewer, but the real test is whether the next question depends on the last answer. Ask each vendor to run the same interview with a vague answer, a wrong one and a great one. If the follow-up never changes, it's a scripted screen. Our guide to one-way vs live AI interviews explains why.
Then match the modality and role coverage to your hiring. Voice-only agents are a natural fit for phone-first, hourly hiring. Video or avatar interviews suit roles where presence and communication count.
Last, look at what you can verify afterward. You want a transcript, a score per skill with reasons, clips you can replay, and a named human who makes the decision. If you hire in New York City, ask who ran the vendor's bias audit and when, and read our guide to AI bias audits.
1. NTRVSTA (us)
It talks with each candidate live, either as a video avatar or as audio only, and moves difficulty up or down depending on how each answer lands. You can pick a ready-made avatar or have one made to match your recruiter's look,. Candidates start whenever they like, 24/7, and the interview can run in multiple languages.
For engineers, the exam library covers languages like Java, Python, C++ and JavaScript, frameworks like React, Angular and Node.js, plus AI/ML and DevOps tools, and system-design rounds use an interactive whiteboard. For everyone else, STAR behavioral questions and soft-skills tracks cover communication, problem-solving and leadership. Reports break the score into technical skills, English proficiency and communication, with video snippets of key moments. Pricing is public, and the Growth plan works out to about $8.74 per interview at 80 a month. Our NYC Local Law 144 bias audit, by Asenion, was finalized October 20, 2026 and is on our compliance page.
Where NTRVSTA isn't the right fit: if your volume is hourly hiring that runs on SMS apply and chat scheduling, Fountain or a conversational ATS will serve you better. We're an interview and screening layer, not an ATS, our native ATS list (Lever and others) is short next to the big suites, and our public API is still coming soon.
Best for: teams that want one adaptive AI interviewer for engineering and business roles, with a video avatar option and prices on the website.

2. HireVue
HireVue added a voice AI Interviewer in June 2026. HireVue says it drafts questions and rubrics from your job description, holds a two-way voice conversation around the clock with probing follow-ups, explains how it scored each answer, and writes results back into the ATS.
Around it sit one-way and live video, assessments and a career-site chat agent. HireVue lists SOC 2 Type 2 and says its fairness audits cover NYC Local Law 144. Prices aren't published. See NTRVSTA vs HireVue for a closer look.
Best for: mid-market and enterprise programs that want AI voice screening from a vendor they may already use for video and assessments.
3. Eightfold AI Interviewer
Eightfold launched its AI Interviewer on October 8, 2025. Eightfold says the agent runs adaptive, conversational interviews by video, audio or text, covering screening, STAR-style functional questions, coding, soft skills and CEFR language checks, which can be combined into one "360 Interview." It says it judges only the content of answers, not facial expressions, tone or accent. In July 2026 it announced a digital-human "Avatar" persona.
Eightfold's compliance list is long: SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 42001, FedRAMP Moderate, and an NYC Local Law 144 bias audit with published results, per its product page. Note that a January 2026 class action, Kistler v. Eightfold AI, targets its candidate Match Scores rather than the interviewer, and was still pending when we checked. Pricing isn't published.
Best for: large enterprises, including Oracle shops and public-sector buyers, that want an AI interviewer inside a bigger talent-intelligence suite.
4. HeyMilo
HeyMilo says its agents screen candidates through two-way voice and video interviews, plus SMS and form flows, 24/7 in 20+ languages. Each answer is scored against your criteria with written reasoning. It also auto-scores resumes and adds trust signals like ID verification and cheat flags, then syncs reports back to the ATS.
Its ATS list leans toward staffing, with Bullhorn, Avionté and JobDiva. It doesn't publish prices.
Best for: staffing firms and high-volume employers that want one agent across voice, video and text channels.
5. Metaview
Metaview, best known as an interview notetaker, launched a voice Screening agent in September 2026. Metaview says it holds an on-demand, two-way conversation that adapts to the role and to each answer, can include role-plays and code to explain or debug, and returns a recording, summary and rubric score. Humans make the call. There's no avatar.
The first 25 screens are free, but the paid screening rate isn't published. Metaview lists SOC 2 Type II and integrates with Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever, Gem and SmartRecruiters.
Best for: recruiting teams that already use Metaview for notes or sourcing and want a voice screen in the same place.
6. Tenzo
Tenzo's AI recruiter is called Morgan. Tenzo says Morgan runs voice AI interviews by phone or video at any hour, alongside resume review, fraud detection, scheduling and rediscovery of past candidates in your ATS. Tenzo says a de-biasing layer strips protected-class details from transcripts before scoring.
Tenzo says it supports 40+ languages and 57+ two-way ATS integrations, and lists SOC 2 Type 2. Pricing is quoted by hiring volume.
Best for: staffing agencies and high-volume employers that want phone and video screening in many languages, plus fraud checks.
7. iMocha (Tara)
iMocha is mainly a skills-assessment company with a library of 10,000+ tests. Its AI interviewer, Tara, is described by iMocha as an adaptive agent: after an audio check, candidates answer out loud, Tara asks follow-ups based on what they said, and it scores skills in real time against role profiles.
It connects to Workday, SAP SuccessFactors and Oracle, cites SOC 2 Type II, and doesn't list prices.
Best for: large employers, especially IT services firms, that already run iMocha tests and want a spoken interview next to them.
8. Fountain (Anna)
Fountain sells a full frontline hiring platform (ATS, CRM, onboarding and shift scheduling) run by an orchestrating agent it calls Cue. Its voice interviewer, Anna, holds structured interviews by phone or browser. Fountain's own FAQ says Anna asks clarifying questions and adapts to candidate responses by default, and returns a score, summary, transcript and recording for a person to review.
Employers who don't want the whole platform can buy Anna alone on the ADP Marketplace. Pricing isn't published.
Best for: hourly and frontline employers in QSR, logistics and gig work that want voice screening inside the system that also schedules and onboards.

Questions
What does an AI interviewer actually do?
It conducts the interview itself. A good one asks a question, listens to the answer, decides what to ask next based on that answer, and then scores the whole conversation with reasons a recruiter can check. That's different from a one-way video tool, which only records answers to fixed prompts.
Which AI interviewers offer a video avatar?
Of the tools here, NTRVSTA offers a video avatar (ready-made or tailored to your recruiter's look) or audio only. Eightfold announced a digital-human Avatar persona in July 2026. HireVue, Metaview and Fountain describe voice interviewers.
Is an AI interviewer the same as a chatbot screen?
No. A chatbot screen usually asks set questions by text or SMS and checks the answers against rules. An AI interviewer holds a spoken or video conversation and changes its questions as it goes. Chat screens are fast; interviewers go deeper.
Should an AI interviewer decide who moves forward?
A person should own that decision. HireVue, Metaview and Fountain all say humans make the final call, and that's the safest setup. Treat the AI's scores and clips as evidence for a recruiter's decision.
